04Your files stay private
Your work is processed locally in your browser where possible and is never added to a Vootkit upload library.
Learn more about privacyPage numbers are the difference between a document someone can discuss and a stack nobody can navigate. "See the third paragraph on page 14" only works if page 14 says so — and most exported PDFs, especially merged ones, carry no numbering at all.
What Add Page Numbers does
Stamps a number onto every page in the corner you choose, drawn as real text into the PDF rather than as an image, so it stays crisp at any zoom and survives printing.
The Start at control exists for documents with front matter. Set it to 0 and the first page is numbered 0, so a cover page can carry no visible number while page 1 falls on the first page of actual content.
Controls
| Positions | Bottom centre (default), bottom right, bottom left, top centre |
|---|---|
| Start at | Any integer from 0 upward |
| Font size | 6 to 40 pt, default 11 |
| Rendering | Real text, not a rasterised stamp |
| Pages affected | All pages in the document |
| Input | |
| Output | PDF with numbering applied |
| Privacy | Processed in your browser — never uploaded |
Detailed steps
- Add the PDF.
- Choose a position. Bottom centre is the safest for double-sided printing, since it does not swap sides between odd and even pages.
- Set Start at if the document opens with a cover or title page.
- Set the font size — 11 pt suits A4 and Letter; go smaller for a dense document.
Worth knowing
Number after merging, never before. Merge two documents that each carry their own numbering and you get a file that runs 1–8 then 1–12, which is worse than no numbers at all. Merge first, then stamp once across the finished document.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I skip the cover page?
Not by excluding it, but you can work around it: set Start at to 0, and the cover carries a 0 while the first content page reads 1. If the cover must show nothing at all, split it off, number the rest, then merge the cover back on.
Will the number cover my content?
It sits in the page margin, so on a normal document it will not. If your content runs into the margin — a full-bleed design or a scanned page with no white space — the number may overlap. Crop or add margin first.
Can I use "Page 3 of 20" instead of just a number?
Not here; the stamp is the number alone. That format needs a word processor or a full PDF editor, since it requires knowing the total on every page.
Do numbers restart if I merge afterwards?
No — they are burned into the pages as text, so merging afterwards leaves them exactly where they are and gives you two independently numbered sequences. Merge first.
Is Add Page Numbers free?
Yes. The Vootkit free plan includes 5 tool runs a day. Upgrade to Vootkit Pro for unlimited daily use, an ad-free workspace and saved workflows.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Add Page Numbers runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your own device and never sent to a server. There is nothing for us to store or delete.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Add Page Numbers works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. Open the page and start.
How often can I use it? Is there a daily limit?
On the free plan you get 5 tool runs a day. When you reach the limit you'll see a prompt to upgrade, and it resets the next day. Vootkit Pro removes the cap entirely for unlimited daily use.
