Learn more about privacy

Screenshots of dashboards, invoices and inboxes get shared constantly, and each one usually contains an email address, an account number or a name that did not need to be there. The safe way to remove it is to destroy the pixels, not cover them.

What Screenshot Redactor does

Lets you paint solid blocks over anything sensitive, then exports the flattened result — the covered pixels are gone from the output, not hidden beneath a shape.

That distinction is the whole point. A rectangle drawn in a document editor sits above content that still exists; this removes it.

Detailed steps

  1. Add the screenshot.
  2. Paint over everything sensitive, covering generously past the edges.
  3. Look at the whole image again — browser tabs and notifications leak more than the content does.
  4. Export and check the result before sending.

Worth knowing

The leak is usually not in the part you were focused on. Browser tab titles, a notification banner, a taskbar, an autofill dropdown, a bookmark bar and the reflection of another window have all exposed information in screenshots that were carefully redacted in the middle. Scan the edges before you export.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the covered content be recovered?

No. The blocks are painted into the image and the result is flattened, so the original pixels are not present in the file. That is the difference between this and drawing a rectangle in a document, where the content underneath still exists.

Why not just blur it?

Because blur is a reversible transformation, and blurred or pixelated text has been recovered in published research and in real leaks. A solid block removes the information; a blur obscures it, and those are not the same guarantee.

How much should I cover?

More than the text itself. Partial characters at the edge of a block are often enough to reconstruct a word, especially for predictable formats like email addresses and account numbers.

Is my screenshot uploaded?

No — everything happens in your browser. That matters here more than almost anywhere else on the site, since the images people redact are by definition the ones containing something they do not want seen.

Is Screenshot Redactor free?

Yes. The Vootkit free plan includes 5 tool runs a day. Upgrade to Vootkit Pro for unlimited daily use, an ad-free workspace and saved workflows.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Screenshot Redactor runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your own device and never sent to a server. There is nothing for us to store or delete.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Screenshot Redactor works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. Open the page and start.

How often can I use it? Is there a daily limit?

On the free plan you get 5 tool runs a day. When you reach the limit you'll see a prompt to upgrade, and it resets the next day. Vootkit Pro removes the cap entirely for unlimited daily use.

This tool processes everything locally in your browser. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will still work.
