How to use Image Blur Tool
Pick the output settings you need.
02Run the tool in your browser.
03Save the finished result.
04Your files stay private
Your work is processed locally in your browser where possible and is never added to a Vootkit upload library.
Learn more about privacyBlur is used for two opposite reasons: to make something look intentional, and to make something unreadable. Only one of those is safe, and the difference matters more than any setting.
What Image Blur Tool does
Applies a blur at a radius from 1 to 40 pixels, default 6. Larger radii cost more processing and remove more detail.
Do not use blur to hide sensitive text. A blurred image still contains the underlying structure, and text blurred at a modest radius has been recovered in practice. For anything that must stay private, cover it with a solid block instead.
Controls and warnings
| Radius | 1 to 40 px, default 6 |
|---|---|
| Good for | Backgrounds, depth effects, softening |
| Not safe for | Hiding text, faces or numbers |
| Why not | Blur is reversible enough to be unreliable |
| Use instead | Screenshot Redactor or PDF Redact — solid blocks |
| Larger radius | Slower, and softens more than intended |
| Output | PNG or JPEG |
| Privacy | Runs in your browser — never uploaded |
Detailed steps
- Add the image.
- Set the radius — 6 is a gentle softening, 30 or more obliterates detail.
- Download.
Worth knowing
Never blur to redact. Blurring is a mathematical transformation, not a deletion, and researchers have repeatedly recovered text and faces from blurred and pixelated images. If information must not be readable, paint a solid black rectangle over it — the Screenshot Redactor and PDF Redact tools do exactly that, and destroy the pixels underneath.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is blurring safe for hiding personal information?
No, and this is worth being blunt about. Blur is reversible enough that blurred and pixelated text has been recovered in published research and in real leaks. Use a solid block, and use a tool that rasterises the result so nothing survives underneath.
What radius should I use?
Around 6 for gentle softening, 15–25 for a clearly blurred background, and 30 or more when you want detail gone entirely — for aesthetic reasons, not privacy ones.
Why is a large radius slow?
Because each output pixel is computed from a larger neighbourhood, so the work rises sharply with radius. On a large photo a radius of 40 is a lot of arithmetic.
Can I blur only part of the image?
Not here — the blur applies to the whole image. For a selective effect, crop the region, blur it, and composite it back in an editor.
Is Image Blur Tool free?
Yes. The Vootkit free plan includes 5 tool runs a day. Upgrade to Vootkit Pro for unlimited daily use, an ad-free workspace and saved workflows.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Image Blur Tool runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your own device and never sent to a server. There is nothing for us to store or delete.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Image Blur Tool works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. Open the page and start.
How often can I use it? Is there a daily limit?
On the free plan you get 5 tool runs a day. When you reach the limit you'll see a prompt to upgrade, and it resets the next day. Vootkit Pro removes the cap entirely for unlimited daily use.
