What Brightness & Contrast does
Adjusts brightness and contrast independently, each on a 0–200 scale where 100 is unchanged. Below 100 reduces, above 100 increases.
Brightness shifts every value up or down; contrast pushes values away from or toward the middle. Understanding that difference is what stops the two undoing each other.

Worth knowing
Watch the extremes, not the middle. Once a highlight is pushed to pure white or a shadow to pure black, the detail there is gone and no amount of pulling back recovers it. Adjust until the image looks right, then back off slightly — a photo that clips is harder to fix later than one that is merely a little flat.

What is the difference between brightness and contrast?
Brightness moves every value in the same direction, lightening or darkening the whole image uniformly. Contrast pushes values away from the middle, making darks darker and lights lighter. Raising brightness alone makes an image look washed out, which is why the two are usually adjusted together.
Which should I adjust first?
Brightness, to get the overall level right, then contrast to restore the punch that lifting brightness removed. Doing it the other way round means re-doing the contrast.
Why has detail disappeared in the bright areas?
It has clipped — those pixels hit maximum and everything above it flattened to the same white. That is permanent in the output, so reduce brightness or contrast and re-export from the original.
Can this fix a very dark photo?
Partly. Raising brightness reveals what was recorded, but shadows also contain most of the noise, so a very underexposed photo gets brighter and grainier together. There is a limit to what was captured.
