Most cropping is not artistic — it is a platform demanding a shape. A square for a profile, 9:16 for a story, 16:9 for a thumbnail. This crops to those ratios directly instead of making you drag handles and hope.

What Crop Image does

Crops to a fixed aspect ratio, taking the largest area of that shape that fits inside your image.

You choose where it takes that area from. Centre suits most photographs; Top is the one to use for portraits, because a centre crop to a square on a standing figure reliably cuts the head off.

Ratios and what they are for

Square 1:1Profile pictures, Instagram feed posts
Portrait 4:5The tallest shape Instagram allows in the feed
Story 9:16Stories, Reels, TikTok, Shorts
Wide 16:9YouTube thumbnails, slides, video covers
Photo 3:2Standard camera ratio, most print sizes
Crop fromCentre (default), Top, or Bottom
ResolutionUnchanged — this removes area, it does not resample

Detailed steps

  1. Drop the image in.
  2. Pick an Aspect ratio.
  3. Set Crop from. Use Top for anything with a person in it, unless they are centred in the frame.
  4. Crop and download.

Worth knowing

Crop before you resize. Cropping removes area and resizing removes detail, so doing it the other way round means you spent quality on pixels you then threw away.

Frequently Asked Questions

It cut off the top of someone’s head.

Centre cropping a tall photo to a square removes equal amounts from the top and bottom, and heads live at the top. Switch Crop from to Top.

Can I choose the exact area myself?

Not here — this is deliberately three clicks rather than a drag interface. For a specific region, crop in an editor and use this for the ratios.

Does cropping reduce quality?

No. It discards area, and what remains is untouched. Only resizing or re-compressing loses detail.

Which ratio does a profile picture need?

Square, on essentially every platform. Most then mask it to a circle when displaying, so keep the subject away from the corners — or use the Round Profile Picture tool, which crops to a circle directly.

Is Crop Image free?

Yes. The Vootkit free plan includes 5 tool runs a day. Upgrade to Vootkit Pro for unlimited daily use, an ad-free workspace and saved workflows.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Crop Image runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your own device and never sent to a server. There is nothing for us to store or delete.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Crop Image works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. Open the page and start.

How often can I use it? Is there a daily limit?

On the free plan you get 5 tool runs a day. When you reach the limit you'll see a prompt to upgrade, and it resets the next day. Vootkit Pro removes the cap entirely for unlimited daily use.

This tool processes everything locally in your browser. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will still work.
