This is the conversion that is usually a mistake, and occasionally exactly right. Worth knowing which one you are doing before you click.

What JPG to PNG does

Converts a JPG to PNG. PNG is lossless, so nothing further is discarded — but nothing already lost comes back either.

The honest warning: on a photograph the PNG will be several times larger than the JPG for no visible gain, because lossless compression has nothing to exploit in continuous gradients. The valid reasons are needing a lossless working copy before editing, or software that will not accept JPEG.

What actually changes

CompressionLossless from this point on
File size on a photoTypically 3–10× larger than the JPG
File size on a screenshotOften smaller, and sharper
Existing JPEG artefactsPreserved exactly — they are part of the image now
TransparencySupported by the format, but a JPG has none to carry
ResolutionUnchanged

Detailed steps

  1. Check you actually want this — on a photograph the PNG will be several times larger for no visible gain.
  2. Drop the JPG in.
  3. Convert and download the PNG.

Worth knowing

Converting to PNG does not undo JPEG compression. The blocking and ringing around edges are baked into the pixels; PNG simply stores them faithfully and at greater size. If a JPG looks bad, the fix is a better source, not a better container.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this make my JPG look better?

No. It preserves exactly what is there, including the compression artefacts. Nothing is recovered.

Why did the file get so much bigger?

That is PNG working as designed. It never discards data, so a photograph — millions of subtly different pixels — has almost nothing repetitive to compress.

When is this genuinely the right move?

Before editing, so repeated saves do not compound JPEG loss; and when software or a print workflow demands PNG.

I wanted transparency.

Converting cannot create it. A JPG has no transparent pixels, so the PNG will be fully opaque. Transparency has to be cut in an editor.

Is JPG to PNG free?

Yes. The Vootkit free plan includes 5 tool runs a day. Upgrade to Vootkit Pro for unlimited daily use, an ad-free workspace and saved workflows.

Are my files uploaded?

No. JPG to PNG runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your own device and never sent to a server. There is nothing for us to store or delete.

Do I need to install anything?

No. JPG to PNG works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. Open the page and start.

How often can I use it? Is there a daily limit?

On the free plan you get 5 tool runs a day. When you reach the limit you'll see a prompt to upgrade, and it resets the next day. Vootkit Pro removes the cap entirely for unlimited daily use.

This tool processes everything locally in your browser. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will still work.
