Learn more about privacyPNG is the right format for logos and screenshots and the wrong format for shipping them to a browser. WebP keeps everything PNG is good at — including transparency — at a fraction of the weight.
What PNG to WebP does
Converts a PNG to WebP at a quality you choose, keeping any transparency.
This is the conversion that makes WebP worth bothering with. Going JPG to WebP saves perhaps a quarter; going PNG to WebP on a graphic frequently saves two thirds, because you are moving from lossless to lossy on an image where the loss is invisible.
Conversion details
| Quality | 40–100%, default 90% |
|---|---|
| Transparency | Kept |
| Typical saving on a graphic | Around 50–70% |
| Typical saving on a screenshot | Substantial, but check text edges at low quality |
| Browser support | Universal in current browsers |
| Weak spots | Older desktop software, some upload portals |
| Resolution | Unchanged |
Detailed steps
- Drop the PNG in.
- Set Quality. 90% is the default; for logos and flat colour you can usually go to 80% with no visible change.
- Convert and download.
Worth knowing
Check text and hard edges before shipping. WebP is lossy at these settings, and while photographs hide that easily, a screenshot of small type is the one case where you may need to stay above 90% — or keep the PNG.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did my transparency survive?
Yes. WebP has a full alpha channel, which is the main reason it can replace PNG rather than sitting alongside it.
Can I get a lossless WebP?
This tool encodes lossily at the quality you pick. At 100% the difference from the PNG is not visible in practice, though it is not bit-for-bit identical.
Should I delete the original PNGs?
No. Keep them as masters. If you ever need another format, converting from the PNG beats converting from an already-lossy WebP.
A tool rejected my WebP.
Older desktop software and some upload portals still do not accept it. Convert back with WebP to PNG.
Is PNG to WebP free?
Yes. The Vootkit free plan includes 5 tool runs a day. Upgrade to Vootkit Pro for unlimited daily use, an ad-free workspace and saved workflows.
Are my files uploaded?
No. PNG to WebP runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your own device and never sent to a server. There is nothing for us to store or delete.
Do I need to install anything?
No. PNG to WebP works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. Open the page and start.
How often can I use it? Is there a daily limit?
On the free plan you get 5 tool runs a day. When you reach the limit you'll see a prompt to upgrade, and it resets the next day. Vootkit Pro removes the cap entirely for unlimited daily use.
