What Image Converter does
Converts between PNG, JPEG and WebP. Pixel dimensions are unchanged; only the encoding changes.
The quality setting applies to JPEG and WebP, which are lossy. PNG ignores it, because PNG is lossless — a PNG at "quality 40" and "quality 100" are the same file.
Formats and settings
| Convert to | PNG (default), JPEG, or WebP |
|---|---|
| Quality | 40–100%, default 92% — applies to JPEG and WebP only |
| Transparency | Kept by PNG and WebP; lost by JPEG |
| Smallest output | WebP, typically 25–35% under JPEG at equal quality |
| Widest compatibility | JPEG |
| Accepts | Any image the browser can open |
| Resolution | Unchanged |
Detailed steps
- Drop the image in.
- Choose Convert to.
- Set Quality if the output is JPEG or WebP. 92% is the default and is visually lossless on most images.
- Convert and download.
Worth knowing
Converting to PNG never shrinks a photograph — it usually grows it several times over. PNG only wins on flat colour: logos, screenshots, diagrams. If the goal is a smaller file from a photo, the answer is JPEG or WebP.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which format should I pick?
WebP for anything going on a website. JPEG for photos you will email or upload somewhere that might be fussy. PNG for logos, screenshots and anything needing transparency.
My transparent background went white.
The output is JPEG, which has no alpha channel. Choose PNG or WebP to keep transparency.
Why is the quality slider greyed out or ignored?
You have selected PNG, which is lossless — there is no quality to trade, so the setting has nothing to act on. It applies only to JPEG and WebP. If you want a smaller file and the slider is doing nothing, that is the format telling you to pick a different one.
Does converting back and forth lose quality?
Between lossy formats, yes, every time. JPEG to WebP to JPEG is two lossy encodes and the damage accumulates. Convert from the original.
