WebP is roughly 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality, and every current browser supports it. For images on a website it is now the sensible default, and converting an existing library is usually the fastest page-speed win available.

What JPG to WebP does

Re-encodes a JPG as WebP at a quality you choose. Pixel dimensions are unchanged.

Unlike JPEG, WebP also supports transparency and animation, so it replaces both JPEG and PNG for web use rather than sitting alongside them.

WebP versus JPEG

Size at equivalent quality25–35% smaller than JPEG
TransparencySupported (JPEG has none)
Browser supportUniversal in current browsers
Weak spotsOlder desktop software, some upload portals, a few print workflows
Effect on SEOIndirect — smaller images improve Largest Contentful Paint, which is a ranking signal
LCP targetUnder 2.5 seconds

Detailed steps

  1. Drop the JPG in.
  2. Set Quality. Around 80% is a good default for web images.
  3. Convert and download the WebP.

Worth knowing

Convert from your original, not from a JPEG that has already been through several saves. JPG to WebP is a second lossy encode, and the artefacts of the first one get encoded along with the picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

A form rejected my WebP file. What now?

Some government and university portals, older desktop software and some print workflows still do not accept WebP. Convert it back with WebP to JPG — you will not recover what was already discarded, but you lose nothing further.

Does WebP help my Google ranking?

Not by itself. What helps is a faster page, and smaller images make pages faster. WebP is a means to that, not a ranking factor.

Should I convert my whole image library?

Convert what is served on your site. Keep the originals in whatever format they came in — you may need them later, and converting from an already-compressed WebP will be worse than converting from the source.

What about AVIF?

Smaller again, and browser support is now good, but it is slower to encode and support outside browsers still lags. Reasonable for a site you control, poor for files you hand to other people.

Is JPG to WebP free?

Yes. The Vootkit free plan includes 5 tool runs a day. Upgrade to Vootkit Pro for unlimited daily use, an ad-free workspace and saved workflows.

Are my files uploaded?

No. JPG to WebP runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your own device and never sent to a server. There is nothing for us to store or delete.

Do I need to install anything?

No. JPG to WebP works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. Open the page and start.

How often can I use it? Is there a daily limit?

On the free plan you get 5 tool runs a day. When you reach the limit you'll see a prompt to upgrade, and it resets the next day. Vootkit Pro removes the cap entirely for unlimited daily use.

This tool processes everything locally in your browser. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will still work.
