Learn more about privacyThe little icon in a browser tab is not one file any more. Between tabs, bookmarks, phone home screens and web app manifests, a site needs the same square at half a dozen sizes.
What Favicon Generator does
Generates the full set of favicon sizes from one square image, and gives you the HTML to reference them.
The sizes are the ones that are actually used: 16 and 32 for browser tabs, 48 for Windows shortcuts, 180 for the Apple touch icon, and 192 and 512 for Android and web app manifests.
Sizes produced and what uses them
| 16×16 | Browser tab, at the smallest size |
|---|---|
| 32×32 | Browser tab on high-density screens; the one most often seen |
| 48×48 | Windows site shortcuts |
| 180×180 | Apple touch icon — iOS home screen |
| 192×192 | Android home screen and web app manifest |
| 512×512 | Manifest, splash screens, app listings |
| Best source | A square image, 512×512 or larger |
| Output | PNG files plus the HTML to paste |
Detailed steps
- Prepare a square source image, ideally 512×512 or larger. A non-square image will be distorted.
- Drop it in and generate.
- Download all six PNGs into the root of your site.
- Paste the generated HTML into the
<head>of every page.
Worth knowing
Design for 16 pixels, not for 512. A detailed logo becomes an unreadable smudge in a browser tab — most good favicons are a single letter, a simple mark, or a heavily simplified version of the full logo. Check the 16×16 output before shipping, because that is the one people actually see.
Frequently Asked Questions
My icon looks like a blur in the tab.
Too much detail for 16 pixels. Simplify: one letter or one shape, strong contrast, no fine lines or small text. Judge the result at actual size rather than zoomed in.
Do I still need an .ico file?
Not for current browsers, which all accept PNG favicons. Only very old Internet Explorer required .ico, and it is no longer worth carrying.
My source image is not square.
It will be squashed to fit. Crop it to a square first — Crop Image with the 1:1 ratio does this in two clicks.
Where do the files go?
The root of your site, so they sit at /favicon-32x32.png and so on, matching the generated HTML. If you put them in a subfolder, update the paths to match.
Is Favicon Generator free?
Yes. The Vootkit free plan includes 5 tool runs a day. Upgrade to Vootkit Pro for unlimited daily use, an ad-free workspace and saved workflows.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Favicon Generator runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your own device and never sent to a server. There is nothing for us to store or delete.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Favicon Generator works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. Open the page and start.
How often can I use it? Is there a daily limit?
On the free plan you get 5 tool runs a day. When you reach the limit you'll see a prompt to upgrade, and it resets the next day. Vootkit Pro removes the cap entirely for unlimited daily use.
