Detailed steps

  1. Lead with the experience relevant to the specific job, not with the most recent if they differ.
  2. Write achievements with numbers — what changed, by how much.
  3. Keep it to one page for under ten years’ experience, two beyond that.

Worth knowing

Send a PDF unless the posting asks for something else, and name the file <code>Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf</code>. A file called <code>cv-final-v3.docx</code> arrives in a folder of two hundred others with the same name, and a .docx reflows differently on the reader’s machine than it did on yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why single column? The two-column designs look better.

They look better to you and often parse badly in the software that reads them first. Applicant tracking systems read top to bottom, left to right; a sidebar can interleave with the main column and produce nonsense. A single column is boring and it survives.

One page or two?

One for under about ten years of experience, two beyond that, and rarely more. The constraint is useful — it forces you to cut the roles that are no longer relevant, which is what a reader wants anyway.

Should I include a photo?

It depends entirely on the country. Expected in parts of Europe and Asia, and actively discouraged in the US, UK and Canada where it raises discrimination concerns and some systems strip it. Check the local norm.

Is my employment history uploaded anywhere?
