Readability scores measure sentence length and syllable count, not clarity. A short sentence full of jargon scores well and communicates nothing — which is worth knowing before optimising for the number.

What Readability Score does

Calculates Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, along with the word, sentence and syllable counts they are derived from.

Both formulas use only two inputs: words per sentence and syllables per word. That simplicity is why they are quick and useful, and also why they can be gamed by chopping sentences in half.

Reading ease scores

90–100Very easy — around age 11
60–70Plain English — the usual target for general audiences
30–50Difficult — academic or technical writing
0–30Very difficult — legal and specialist text
Grade levelUS school grade needed to read it comfortably
Common guidanceAim for grade 8–10 for a general audience
What it measuresSentence and word length only — not clarity or accuracy

Detailed steps

  1. Paste your text.
  2. Read the ease score and grade level together.
  3. If the score is low, look for long sentences first — they move the number most.
  4. Then read it aloud, which catches what the formula cannot.

Worth knowing

Improve the score by splitting long sentences, not by replacing precise words with vague ones. The formula rewards short words, so "use" scores better than "utilise" — which is a genuine improvement — but it also rewards "thing" over "deductible", which is not. The score is a prompt to re-read, not a target to hit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What score should I aim for?

Around 60–70 reading ease, or grade 8–10, for a general audience. Technical documentation for specialists can reasonably sit lower. Government and health guidance often targets grade 8 or below, because the cost of being misunderstood is high.

Does a high score mean the writing is good?

No. The formula counts syllables and sentence length; it cannot detect whether the text is accurate, well organised or interesting. Text can score beautifully and still be meaningless.

Why did my score change after I added a heading?

Headings without full stops can be read as part of the following sentence, inflating the words-per-sentence figure. Paste the body text alone for a cleaner reading.

Does readability affect SEO?

Not directly — there is no readability ranking factor. It affects whether people stay and finish, which does matter. Write for the reader and the score generally follows.
