Learn more about privacyWriting a title in a text field tells you nothing about how it will look in a results page. Seeing it truncated, next to competitors, is what changes what you write.
What SERP Snippet Preview does
Renders your title, URL and description the way a search result displays them, so you can see the truncation before publishing.
The value is entirely in the preview. A description reads fine in a form field and lands badly when cut off mid-sentence between the ninth and tenth word.
What to check in the preview
| Title truncation | Around 60 characters, by pixel width |
|---|---|
| Description truncation | Around 155 characters |
| Mobile | Shows less than desktop — check the tighter case |
| URL display | Shown as a breadcrumb path rather than the raw URL |
| Front-loading | The distinctive words should survive the cut |
| Brand name | Usually last in the title, first to be truncated |
| Actual result | Google may rewrite either field |
Detailed steps
- Paste your title, URL and description.
- Look at where each one is cut.
- Rewrite so the important words appear before the cut.
- Read the description as a sentence — does it give a reason to click?
Worth knowing
Write the description as a promise rather than a summary. "Merge PDFs in your browser — nothing uploaded, no upload wait" gives someone a reason to click; "This page contains a tool for merging PDF files" describes the page to someone who is not reading it yet. The distinction is worth more than any keyword.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my result look exactly like this?
Close, but not guaranteed. Google adjusts titles and rewrites descriptions depending on the query, and result layouts change over time. Use the preview to catch truncation and awkward phrasing, not as a pixel-perfect promise.
Should the brand name go in the title?
Usually at the end, separated by a pipe or dash, so it is the first thing truncated. The exception is a well-known brand, where leading with it can improve trust enough to be worth the space.
How long should the description be?
Long enough to give a reason to click, short enough to survive. Around 150 characters is safe. Very short descriptions leave the page looking thin; very long ones lose their ending.
Does every page need a unique description?
Every page you care about ranking, yes. Duplicated descriptions across a site are a signal of templated content, and they waste the one piece of copy you fully control in the results page.
