Business cards get rejected by printers for one reason more than any other: they were designed on screen at screen resolution, and screen resolution is roughly a quarter of what print needs. The result looks fine in the browser and fuzzy on card.

What Business Card Maker does

Produces a card at the standard 3.5 × 2 inches, rendered at 1050 × 600 pixels — which is exactly 300 DPI, the resolution commercial printers expect.

That arithmetic is the whole point: 3.5 × 300 = 1050, and 2 × 300 = 600. A card designed at 350 × 200 would look identical on screen and print badly.

Detailed steps

  1. Enter your details — name, role, and the one or two ways you actually want to be contacted.
  2. Keep text clear of the outer few millimetres.
  3. Download and send to your printer.
  4. Ask the printer whether they need bleed before ordering a large run.

Worth knowing

Leave about 3 mm of clear space inside every edge. Printers cut through stacks of cards and the blade drifts by a fraction of a millimetre — text set close to the edge on the design ends up touching the edge, or cut off, on some cards in the stack. That margin is why professional cards look centred and home-made ones do not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why 1050 × 600 pixels?

Because that is 3.5 × 2 inches at 300 DPI, the standard print resolution. Designing at screen resolution — say 350 × 200 — gives a file that looks correct in a browser and prints visibly soft, which is the most common reason a card comes back disappointing.

Is this the right size everywhere?

3.5 × 2 in is the US standard. Much of Europe uses 85 × 55 mm and Japan 91 × 55 mm — close but not identical. Check with your printer if you are outside the US.

What is bleed, and do I need it?

Bleed is extra artwork past the trim line so that a colour running to the edge still does after cutting. This does not add bleed, so keep backgrounds and text away from the edge, or ask your printer whether they need a bleed version.

Why might the colours look different when printed?

Screens are RGB and presses are CMYK, and some bright RGB colours simply cannot be reproduced in ink. Vivid blues and greens shift most. Ask for a proof before a large run.
