  1. Name both parties in full — legal entity names, not trading names.
  2. Write the scope from the accepted quote or proposal so the documents agree.
  3. Set payment terms as dates or milestones, and say what happens if either side stops.
  4. Export, then have it reviewed if the amounts are meaningful.

The clause worth arguing over is what happens when the project stalls on the client’s side. Work that is 80% done and waiting indefinitely for feedback is unpaid work with no end date. A line saying the balance becomes payable if the project is inactive for 30 days solves the most common cashflow problem in freelancing.

Can I use this without a lawyer?

For small, low-risk engagements many people do, and a plain written agreement is far better than nothing. But this is a template with no knowledge of your jurisdiction or your trade — if the value is significant, or it involves employment or intellectual property, have it reviewed. That review is reusable across every future client.

What must a contract include to be valid?

That varies by country, and this cannot tell you. Broadly, an offer, acceptance and something of value exchanged — but formalities differ, and some agreements must be written or witnessed. Local advice is the only reliable answer.

How do I get it signed?
