Dictation is several times faster than typing for a first draft, and browsers have built-in recognition — with one significant caveat about which browsers, and where the audio goes.

What Speech to Text does

Uses the browser’s SpeechRecognition API to transcribe speech as you talk.

Support is uneven and this one is not necessarily local. Chrome and Edge implement it; Firefox largely does not. And unlike the other tools here, the browser may send audio to the vendor’s servers for recognition — that is the browser’s behaviour, not this page’s, and it is worth knowing before dictating anything sensitive.

  2. Allow microphone access and speak clearly, at a normal pace.
  3. Always proofread. Dictation errors are real words, so a spellchecker will not catch them.

Worth knowing

Do not dictate anything confidential. Unlike every other tool here, recognition may be performed on the browser vendor’s servers rather than on your device — so the audio can leave your machine. That is the browser’s design and no web page can change it. For sensitive material, type it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does nothing happen in Firefox?

Because Firefox does not implement the SpeechRecognition API in the way Chrome and Edge do. This is a browser capability rather than something a page can provide — use a Chromium-based browser.

Is my speech processed on my device?

Not necessarily, and this is the one tool on the site where the honest answer is "it depends on your browser". Chromium may send audio to Google for recognition. This page transmits nothing itself, but it cannot control what the browser API does.

Why is the accuracy poor?

Background noise, distance from the microphone, fast speech and accents outside the model’s training all reduce it. Getting closer to the microphone helps more than speaking slowly.

Does it add punctuation?

Usually only when you say it — "comma", "full stop", "new paragraph". Expect to add most of it yourself, and proofread carefully: dictation errors are valid words, so spellcheck will not flag them.
