04Your files stay private

Learn more about privacyA sitemap is a request for crawl attention, not a command. Google decides what to index; the sitemap only tells it what exists and when it last changed.
What Sitemap Generator does
Builds an XML sitemap from your URLs, with optional change frequency and last-modified dates.
lastmod is the field that does real work. A changed date is the signal that a page is worth recrawling — which matters far more than priority, a field Google has said it ignores.
What matters in a sitemap
|
lastmod
| The useful field — signals a recrawl |
|---|---|
|
priority
| Ignored by Google |
|
changefreq
| A hint at best |
| Maximum URLs | 50,000 per file |
| Maximum size | 50 MB uncompressed |
| More than that | Use a sitemap index |
| Include | Only canonical, indexable URLs |
| Submit at | Search Console → Sitemaps |
Detailed steps
- List only canonical URLs you actually want indexed.
- Set
lastmodhonestly — see the tip. - Submit the absolute URL in Search Console.
Worth knowing
Only update
lastmod
when the page genuinely changed. Setting every page to today on every build teaches Google the field is meaningless on your site, and it stops acting on it — which costs you the one lever a sitemap actually gives you. An honest date on a genuinely changed page is worth more than a fresh date on everything.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a sitemap guarantee indexing?
No. It tells Google what exists and when it changed; indexing remains a judgement about whether the page is worth including. Thin or duplicate pages listed in a sitemap stay unindexed.
Should I set priority?
It does not matter — Google has stated it ignores the field. Spend the effort on
lastmod
, which does influence recrawl scheduling.
What should I leave out?
Non-canonical duplicates, redirects, error pages, and anything marked
noindex
. A sitemap full of pages you do not want indexed dilutes the signal and wastes crawl budget.
How many URLs can one file hold?
50,000, or 50 MB uncompressed, whichever comes first. Beyond that, split into several sitemaps and reference them from a sitemap index file.
Is Sitemap Generator free?
Yes. The Vootkit free plan includes 5 tool runs a day. Upgrade to Vootkit Pro for unlimited daily use, an ad-free workspace and saved workflows.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Sitemap Generator runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your own device and never sent to a server. There is nothing for us to store or delete.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Sitemap Generator works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. Open the page and start.
How often can I use it? Is there a daily limit?
On the free plan you get 5 tool runs a day. When you reach the limit you'll see a prompt to upgrade, and it resets the next day. Vootkit Pro removes the cap entirely for unlimited daily use.
