02Let the browser do the work.
03Copy, download or continue.
04Your files stay private
Your work is processed locally in your browser where possible and is never added to a Vootkit upload library.
Learn more about privacySomeone returns "the updated contract" and says a few things changed. Finding out which few, across forty pages, by reading both versions side by side, is an afternoon you do not have — and the paragraph you skim is the one that mattered.
What Compare PDFs does
Extracts the text from two PDFs and shows what differs between them, so you can see the changes rather than hunt for them.
This is a text comparison. It finds wording changes reliably. It does not compare layout, images, fonts or formatting, so a document that has been restyled but not reworded will look unchanged here — which is correct, and occasionally not what you wanted.
Scope
| Compares | Extracted text of two PDFs |
|---|---|
| Detects | Added, removed and altered wording |
| Does not detect | Layout, image, font or colour changes |
| Scanned PDFs | Not supported — run OCR first |
| Files needed | Exactly two |
| Privacy | Both files stay in your browser |
| Output | A readable list of differences |
Detailed steps
- Add the original as the first file and the revision as the second — the order decides what reads as an addition.
- Compare.
- Work through the differences, then confirm the important ones in the actual document.
Worth knowing
If the comparison shows every line as changed, the two files almost certainly extract text in a different order — common when one was exported from Word and the other printed from a browser. That is a formatting difference dressed up as a content one, and it means you need to read those sections manually.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does it say nothing changed when I can see it did?
Because the change was visual rather than textual — a new logo, different spacing, a colour. Text comparison sees the words only, and the words are the same.
Can I compare scanned documents?
Not directly. A scan is an image and contains no extractable text. Run both through PDF OCR first, then compare the results — accepting that OCR errors will show up as false differences.
Does it show me where on the page a change is?
It reports the differing text rather than a position. Search for the phrase in the original to find it, which is usually faster than a page reference anyway.
Are my documents uploaded?
No. Both files are read in your browser and neither leaves your device — which matters here, since the documents people most want to compare are contracts.
Is Compare PDFs free?
Yes. The Vootkit free plan includes 5 tool runs a day. Upgrade to Vootkit Pro for unlimited daily use, an ad-free workspace and saved workflows.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Compare PDFs runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your own device and never sent to a server. There is nothing for us to store or delete.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Compare PDFs works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. Open the page and start.
How often can I use it? Is there a daily limit?
On the free plan you get 5 tool runs a day. When you reach the limit you'll see a prompt to upgrade, and it resets the next day. Vootkit Pro removes the cap entirely for unlimited daily use.
