A practical quality check
Test your upload speed rather than assuming it. Consumer broadband is usually asymmetric — a 500 Mbps download often comes with a 50 Mbps upload or less — and the advertised headline figure is almost always the download. This is the single reason upload estimates come out so wrong.
Common questions
Why is my upload so much slower than my download?
Most consumer connections are deliberately asymmetric, on the assumption that people consume more than they send. Cable and DSL are the worst offenders; fibre is often symmetric. Check your actual figure — it is frequently a tenth of the download speed.
Why does the real time exceed the estimate?
Protocol overhead, encryption and the service’s own processing all take a share, and wifi adds variability. Ten to twenty percent above the theoretical figure is normal. Anything far worse suggests wifi or a congested line.
How do I convert Mbps to MB/s?
Divide by eight. A 100 Mbps line moves at most 12.5 MB/s, so a 1 GB file takes at least 80 seconds. Providers quote bits because the number looks eight times larger.
Can I make the upload faster?
Make the file smaller — it is the only lever you control. Compressing a video before uploading often cuts the transfer by more than any network change would.
