How to Remove Photo Metadata and GPS Details Before Sharing

A photograph contains visible information and may also carry hidden fields describing when, where and how it was created. That metadata is useful in a private photo library. It can be an unnecessary privacy risk in a marketplace listing, public forum, application document or shared original file.

The safest approach is simple: keep your original, inspect it, create a clean sharing copy and verify that copy before uploading it anywhere.

What photo metadata can contain

JPEG files commonly use EXIF metadata. Depending on the camera, phone and settings, fields may include:

  • Capture date and time
  • Camera or phone make and model
  • Lens and exposure settings
  • Image orientation
  • Editing software
  • GPS latitude, longitude and altitude

Not every photo contains every field. Screenshots and images downloaded from social platforms often have little EXIF data, while an original phone photograph may contain precise location coordinates if camera location services were enabled.

Metadata is not the only risk. The picture itself may show a house number, vehicle plate, school badge, reflection, shipping label or computer screen. Removing EXIF does not remove visible evidence.

Inspect the file locally

Open EXIF Viewer and select a JPEG. Vootkit reads the raw metadata on your device and reports available fields such as dimensions, file size, camera details and GPS data. The image is not uploaded.

If no camera EXIF is found, that does not prove the picture is anonymous. Other metadata containers may exist, and visible details still need a human review.

Create a clean copy

Use Metadata Remover for JPEG, PNG or WebP images:

  1. Select the image.
  2. Wait while the browser decodes it and draws the visible picture to a new canvas.
  3. Download the clean copy.
  4. Keep the original separately if its date or location matters to your archive.

Re-encoding the visible image creates a new file without the original EXIF, GPS and camera fields. The tool preserves the appearance and dimensions, but encoded bytes can change—especially for JPEG—so compare the clean copy visually rather than assuming it is mathematically identical.

Verify before you publish

Run the downloaded clean copy through EXIF Viewer, not the original. Confirm that sensitive fields are absent. Then inspect the visible image at full size.

If a private object appears in the frame, crop it out or use Screenshot Redactor to create a visibly redacted copy. Redaction changes pixels; metadata removal does not conceal anything already visible.

Finally, confirm that you are uploading the filename ending in -clean, not the original beside it.

Do platforms remove metadata automatically?

Many major social networks re-encode images and often remove EXIF during upload. You should not depend on that behaviour for every service, attachment or download option. A forum, marketplace, messaging service or shared drive may preserve the original file, and platform behaviour can change.

Cleaning the copy before upload means your privacy does not depend on the recipient doing the right thing later.

Quality and file size

Re-encoding can make the file smaller or occasionally larger. A smaller number does not automatically mean a worse result, and a larger number does not restore lost detail. Judge the actual picture at the size where it will be used.

If the clean image is still too large, use Compress Image on a copy. Compression is a separate decision from privacy cleaning. Choose the lightest setting that meets the upload limit.

Common questions

The cleaned file receives a new filesystem creation date, and its original capture date field is removed. Keep the original if chronological organization matters.

Can GPS data be recovered from the cleaned copy?

The removed EXIF fields are not present in the new file. However, someone may still infer a location from visible landmarks or other copies.

Are screenshots safe automatically?

They usually carry less camera metadata, but they can expose notifications, account names, browser tabs and private screen content. Inspect the pixels.

Should I delete the original?

Not necessarily. The original metadata can be valuable for personal archives and photography workflows. Store it privately and share only the clean derivative.
