Learn more about privacyTyping speed is one of the few skills where most people plateau early, stay there for decades, and never find out — because nothing they do gives them a number.
What Typing Speed Test does
Times you against a sample passage and reports words per minute alongside accuracy.
Both figures matter, and the relationship between them is the point. WPM alone is easy to inflate by typing fast and wrong; the accuracy figure is what stops the number being meaningless.
How the numbers work
| A "word" | Standardised as five characters, including spaces — so WPM is comparable |
|---|---|
| Average adult | Around 40 WPM |
| Competent office typing | 55-70 WPM |
| Professional transcription | 80-100+ WPM |
| Accuracy target | Above 97% — below that, corrections cost more time than the speed gained |
| Runs | On your device; no result is uploaded or ranked anywhere |
Detailed steps
- Start typing the passage. The timer begins on your first keystroke, not on page load.
- Type it as you normally would — do not slow down to be neat, or the number describes a way of typing you never use.
- Read accuracy before speed.
- Repeat on another day. One run is a mood; three runs across a week is a baseline.
Worth knowing
If accuracy is under about 95%, speed is the wrong thing to work on. Every error costs a backspace, a retype and a break in rhythm, which is far more time than the keystrokes you saved rushing — most people get measurably faster overall by deliberately slowing down until accuracy is consistent, then letting speed return on its own. The fastest typists are not racing; they are simply not correcting.
Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as a word?
Five characters including spaces, which is the standard convention across typing tests. It exists so that "supercalifragilistic" and "cat cat cat cat" score comparably, and it is why your WPM here should be roughly consistent with any other test that follows the same rule rather than counting actual words.
Is my score good?
Around 40 WPM is typical for an adult, 55-70 is comfortable office proficiency, and 80 or above is genuinely quick. But context matters more than the ranking: 60 WPM at 99% accuracy beats 75 WPM at 92%, because the second typist spends the difference correcting and loses their place doing it.
Why did my speed drop when I tried to be accurate?
It usually does at first, and then it comes back higher. Accuracy is a motor habit — once the corrections stop, rhythm improves and speed follows without you pushing for it. Chasing raw WPM tends to lock in an error rate that caps how fast you can ever get.
Does the test store my results?
No. It runs entirely in the page, nothing is sent anywhere and nothing is kept between visits, so there is no history or leaderboard. If you want to track progress, write the numbers down — three runs across a week tells you far more than any single result.
Is Typing Speed Test free?
