The reason to use a randomiser for a decision is rarely the randomness. It is that a visibly impartial process ends an argument that a human choice would have started.

What Random Picker does

Picks one or several options at random from a list you paste in, with an option to avoid repeats.

The no-repeats setting is the difference between drawing names from a hat and putting each name back before drawing again — two genuinely different things people often conflate.

How the draw works

InputOne option per line
Unique picksEach option can be drawn once — like a hat you do not refill
Repeats allowedEach pick is independent; the same name can come up twice
RandomnessThe browser’s generator — fine for draws, not for cryptography
Blank linesIgnored, so a trailing newline does not become an entry
ProcessingIn the browser; the list is not stored or sent anywhere

Detailed steps

  1. Paste your options, one per line. Blank lines are ignored, so a stray newline at the end will not become an entry.
  2. Set how many to pick. Drawing several at once is not the same as drawing one repeatedly — see the repeats setting below.
  3. Decide on repeats. For a prize draw you almost always want unique.
  4. Draw. Each run is independent — re-running until you like the answer defeats the purpose.

Worth knowing

If the draw needs to be credible to other people, run it once with them watching, or record the screen. A result produced privately and announced afterwards carries no more weight than simply choosing, because nobody can tell how many times it was run. The value of a randomiser in any contested decision is entirely in the visibility of the process, not in the quality of the randomness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I allow repeats?

For a prize draw, no — a name drawn once should come out of the hat, which is what unique picks do. Allow repeats when each pick is genuinely independent, like choosing a task at random each day, where yesterday having come up should not exclude it today.

Is it actually random?

It uses the browser’s built-in generator, which is pseudorandom: statistically well distributed and entirely fine for draws, teams, seating and decisions. It is not cryptographically secure, so it should not be used to generate anything an adversary has an incentive to predict, such as tokens or passwords.

Can I use it for a public prize draw?

The mechanism is fair, but fairness that cannot be observed does not settle anything. Draw live, or record it, so entrants can see it was a single run. Many jurisdictions also have specific rules about prize promotions, which are about process and record-keeping rather than the randomiser you used.

Is my list saved?

No. It is read in the page, used for the draw and forgotten when you close the tab — nothing is written to your device or sent to a server. That matters when the list is real names, which for most uses of this tool it is.

Is Random Picker free?

Yes. The Vootkit free plan includes 5 tool runs a day. Upgrade to Vootkit Pro for unlimited daily use, an ad-free workspace and saved workflows.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Random Picker runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your own device and never sent to a server. There is nothing for us to store or delete.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Random Picker works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. Open the page and start.

How often can I use it? Is there a daily limit?

On the free plan you get 5 tool runs a day. When you reach the limit you'll see a prompt to upgrade, and it resets the next day. Vootkit Pro removes the cap entirely for unlimited daily use.

This tool processes everything locally in your browser. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will still work.
