Learn more about privacyThe strength of a password is not about exotic characters — it is about how many guesses an attacker needs. Length buys that far more cheaply than substituting a 3 for an E, and this shows you the arithmetic as you change the settings.
What Password Generator does
Generates a random password from the character sets you enable, using the browser’s cryptographic random source rather than ordinary randomness.
It also reports entropy in bits and an estimated offline cracking time, which is the number that actually matters. Watching that figure move as you add characters is more persuasive than any rule about symbols.
Settings and what they buy
| Length | 6–48 characters, default 18 |
|---|---|
| Character sets | a–z, A–Z, 0–9, Symbols — each toggled independently |
| Strength shown as | Entropy in bits, plus estimated offline crack time |
| Randomness | The browser’s cryptographic generator, not Math.random |
| Rough guide | Under 50 bits is weak; 80+ is strong; 100+ is future-proof |
| Biggest lever | Length — each extra character multiplies the search space |
| Generated | In this page — never transmitted |
Detailed steps
- Set the Length. 18 is the default and a good floor for anything that matters.
- Leave all four character sets on unless a site refuses symbols.
- Check the entropy figure, then copy the password straight into your password manager.
Worth knowing
Length beats complexity, and it is not close. Adding one character multiplies the number of possible passwords by the size of the character set; swapping a letter for a symbol adds almost nothing by comparison. If a site caps length at 12, that is the site’s weakness rather than yours — use all 12.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a password be?
At least 16 characters for anything that matters, and the 18-character default is a sensible floor. Since you should be storing it in a password manager rather than remembering it, there is no reason to be economical.
A site rejected my password.
Some still cap length or ban symbols — both are signs of an ageing system. Turn off Symbols or reduce the length to fit, and use the maximum the site allows.
Is this random enough to trust?
It uses the browser’s cryptographic random source, which is designed for exactly this and is not the ordinary Math.random. The password is generated in the page and never transmitted.
What does the bits figure mean?
Entropy — how many guesses an attacker needs on average. Each extra bit doubles that. Under 50 bits is weak against a determined attacker with modern hardware; above 80 is strong; above 100 is comfortable for the foreseeable future.
Is Password Generator free?
Yes. The Vootkit free plan includes 5 tool runs a day. Upgrade to Vootkit Pro for unlimited daily use, an ad-free workspace and saved workflows.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Password Generator runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your own device and never sent to a server. There is nothing for us to store or delete.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Password Generator works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. Open the page and start.
How often can I use it? Is there a daily limit?
On the free plan you get 5 tool runs a day. When you reach the limit you'll see a prompt to upgrade, and it resets the next day. Vootkit Pro removes the cap entirely for unlimited daily use.
