Adding tax to a price and removing it are not the same sum reversed, and getting them the wrong way round is the commonest arithmetic error in small-business bookkeeping.

What VAT / GST Calculator does

Adds tax to a net price, or extracts it from a gross one — you say which the amount already is. Defaults to 20% on 100.

Removing tax is not "subtract the percentage". To strip 20% from a gross 120 you divide by 1.20 to get 100, not subtract 20% to get 96. That mistake is off by 4% and it compounds across every line of a return.

The two directions

Add taxnet × (1 + rate)
Remove taxgross ÷ (1 + rate)

Detailed steps

 1. Enter the amount and say whether it already includes tax.
 2. Enter your rate.
 3. Read the net, the tax and the gross.

Worth knowing

To remove tax, divide — never subtract. Stripping 20% from a gross 120 by subtracting 20% gives 96, which is wrong; dividing by 1.20 gives the correct 100. The gap widens with the rate, and on a VAT return applied across hundreds of lines it becomes a material error rather than a rounding one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can I not just subtract the percentage?

Because the tax was calculated on the net amount, not the gross. 20% of 100 is 20, giving 120 — but 20% of 120 is 24. Subtracting works from the wrong base, which is why the answer comes out low.

What rate should I use?

Whatever applies where you are selling, which often depends on the product too — many countries apply reduced rates to food, books or children’s clothing. Cross-border digital sales frequently use the customer’s rate rather than yours.

Should my prices include tax?

Consumer prices are usually quoted gross and business-to-business prices net, but conventions differ by country and are sometimes legally required. Say clearly on your invoice which you have quoted.

Is this tax advice?

No. It applies a rate you supply. Registration thresholds, reverse-charge rules and cross-border obligations are genuinely complicated and need an accountant.
