How to Convert Volume and Capacity Units

Identify the measurement convention before adapting a recipe or container quantity.

A practical example

Two litres is approximately 0.528 US gallons but only 0.440 imperial gallons. A result can therefore differ noticeably even when the starting amount is identical. If a recipe says cup without identifying its convention, confirm the source rather than assuming every cup is the same.

Check the result

Use a measuring vessel marked for the intended unit and round to the accuracy needed by the task. Small spoon quantities may require more care than filling a large storage container.

Try a comparison

For the recipe task, convert a familiar litre amount first and check the chosen gallon convention. Keep ingredient scaling separate from unit conversion: doubling a recipe doubles every quantity before conversion, but may also require different cooking time or equipment.

What this does not establish

A volume conversion does not convert an ingredient to mass without density. Do not substitute a weight measurement solely from a volume result.
