Working out an exact age is fiddly precisely because months are not the same length. "Two years, three months and eleven days" cannot be derived from a day count, and a day count cannot be derived from it either.

What the Age & Date Difference does

Gives the gap between two dates as years, months and days, and also as a total in days, weeks and hours.

Both readings are useful for different things. Years-months-days is how people describe an age; totals are what you need for deadlines, notice periods and anything counted rather than named.

Open the Age & Date Difference and follow the settings and checks below.

What it reports

Setting What it means
Calendar gap Years, months and days
Total days The exact count between the dates
Total weeks Days ÷ 7
Total hours Days × 24
Leap years Handled — they are real days in the total
Direction Works forwards or backwards, so it covers future dates too
Inputs Two dates

How to use it

  1. Enter the start date.
  2. Enter the end date — today for an age, a future date for a countdown.
  3. Read whichever figure suits: the calendar gap for describing it, the totals for counting it.

Practical advice

The two answers genuinely disagree and both are right. Someone born on 29 February has a birthday every four years but ages one year every year, and "18 months" is a different number of days depending on which months they were. If a contract or a deadline is involved, use the total-days figure — it is the one that is unambiguous.

Common questions

Why does the month count seem off by a day?

Because months vary between 28 and 31 days, so "one month later" from the 31st is ambiguous. The calendar gap counts whole months first and the remainder in days, which is how people describe an age but is not a fixed number of days.

Are leap years included?

Yes. They are real days and appear in the total-days figure. That is why a span covering a leap year has one more day than an otherwise identical one that does not.

Can I calculate a future date gap?

Yes — put today first and the future date second. It works in both directions, so it covers deadlines and countdowns as well as ages.

Total days, unless the rule specifically says months. Day counts are unambiguous; month counts depend on which months and on how the drafter intended partial months to be treated.
