Convert a floor area without accidentally using a length conversion factor.

A practical example
A room measuring 4 m by 3 m covers 12 m². Since one square foot is 0.09290304 m², that area is approximately 129.17 ft². Converting each side and multiplying gives the same area; multiplying 12 by the metres-to-feet factor only once does not.
Check the result
Compare the room dimensions with the converted area. Keep extra precision through the calculation, then round the final figure to the precision justified by your measurements.
Try a comparison
Double one side of the example room from 4 m to 8 m while keeping the other side at 3 m. The area doubles to 24 m². Doubling both sides would quadruple it, which matters when scaling a floor plan.
What this does not establish
An area conversion does not include cutting waste, wall thickness or irregular sections. Measure those separately before ordering flooring.
