An image becomes blurry or stretched for predictable reasons: it was enlarged beyond the detail it contains, forced into the wrong shape, compressed too aggressively or displayed at dimensions that do not match the exported file.
Resizing works well when you separate three decisions—dimensions, shape and format—instead of changing all three blindly.
Pixels are not the same as file size
Pixel dimensions describe the image grid, such as 4000×3000 or 1200×800. File size describes how many bytes the encoded file uses. A 4000×3000 JPEG can be smaller than a 1200×800 PNG because format and compression differ.
Resize when the image has more pixels than the destination needs. Compress when the dimensions are appropriate but the file is still too heavy. Often you will resize first and compress second.
Find the destination dimensions
Do not guess if the website, form or template states a requirement. Look for:
- Exact width and height in pixels
- A maximum width
- An aspect ratio such as 16:9 or 1:1
- A maximum file size
- An accepted format such as JPEG, PNG or WebP
If only a display width is given, export close to that width. A page that displays an image at 800 pixels wide rarely benefits from receiving a 5000-pixel original, unless it supports high-density variants or zooming.
Preserve the aspect ratio
Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height. A 1200×800 image has a 3:2 ratio. Changing it to 900×600 preserves that shape; changing it to 900×900 stretches or compresses the content.
Open Image Resizer, choose a target width and leave Keep aspect ratio selected for ordinary resizing. Vootkit calculates the height from the original proportions.
Use Exact height too only when the destination requires exact dimensions and you understand that forcing a different ratio can distort the picture. Usually the better workflow is to crop to the required shape first, then resize.
Why enlarging creates blur
Downscaling combines existing pixels. Upscaling must invent additional pixels by interpolation. It can smooth blocky edges, but it cannot recover eyelashes, small print or texture that was never captured.
If a 400-pixel logo must fill a 2000-pixel banner, look for the original vector file or a larger source. Image Sharpen can improve perceived edge contrast after moderate resizing, but sharpening is not detail reconstruction and too much creates halos.
Choose the export format

Prevent a website from resizing badly
Exporting the right file is only half the job. In CSS, avoid assigning unrelated fixed width and height values without an appropriate object-fit rule. Preserve the intrinsic ratio or deliberately crop inside a fixed container.
Serve dimensions close to the rendered size. An oversized image wastes bandwidth; an undersized image enlarged by the browser looks soft. For responsive sites, use srcset or an image pipeline that provides more than one size.
Common questions
Why did the resized image become larger in bytes?
You may have changed from JPEG to PNG, selected a less efficient format for the content or re-encoded an already optimized source. Keep the original when it is smaller and already has the right dimensions.
What width should I use for a website?
Use the largest width at which the image is actually displayed, with an additional high-density variant when the design supports it. There is no universal width for every layout.
Can I resize without losing any quality?
Changing raster dimensions always changes pixel data. Downscaling can look excellent; upscaling cannot create genuine missing detail. Keep the original as the master.
Should I compress before or after resizing?
Resize first, then compress the final dimensions. Compressing a huge source and resizing afterward performs two lossy operations without a benefit.
The reliable sequence
Match the destination shape, resize downward with the ratio preserved, choose a suitable format, inspect at real size and only then compress if necessary. That sequence avoids almost every blurry-image problem.
