What Mute / Strip Audio does
Strips the audio track and copies the video through untouched. The exact command is -c copy -an: no decoding, no re-encoding, no quality loss whatsoever. The picture in the output is bit-for-bit the picture you put in.
Because nothing is re-encoded it finishes in seconds even on a long clip, and the file gets slightly smaller — you removed a track and added nothing.
Three situations account for most muting. A background soundtrack that would earn an automated copyright claim on YouTube or Instagram. A recording that accidentally captured a conversation, a doorbell, a name — removing the track is the only way to be certain that audio is gone, since lowering the volume leaves it recoverable. And footage destined for an edit where a voiceover or licensed track will be laid over the top anyway, in which case the original sound is dead weight.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does muting reduce the quality?
No, and that is the point. The video track is copied rather than re-encoded, so the output is mathematically identical to the input. Anything that re-encodes to mute — most desktop editors, by default — throws away quality for no reason.
Why is it so much faster than the other video tools?
Nothing is decoded. Compressing or resizing has to decode every frame, process it and encode it again, which is why those take minutes. Removing a track only requires rewriting the container, so the work is proportional to file size rather than to frame count.
Can I lower the volume instead of removing it?
Use the Volume Adjuster, which keeps the track and scales it. Note that it must re-encode the audio to do so, though it still copies the video through untouched.
Can I get the audio back afterwards?
Not from the muted file — the track is genuinely removed rather than silenced, so there is nothing left to recover. That is deliberate, and it is why this is the right tool when the point is that nobody should be able to hear what was recorded. Keep your original, or run Extract Audio first to save the soundtrack separately before muting.
Which formats can I mute?
