Learn more about privacyTipping is a local custom that travellers routinely get wrong in both directions — under-tipping in the US where staff depend on it, and over-tipping in Japan where it can cause genuine awkwardness.
What Tipping Calculator by Country does
Suggests a tip for a given bill in nine countries: the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Australia and Japan.
The range between them is enormous, and it reflects how staff are paid rather than how generous the customers are.
Coverage
| Countries | US · Canada · UK · Germany · France · Italy · Spain · Australia · Japan |
|---|---|
| United States | Highest — tipped wages are below minimum |
| Japan | Not customary — can cause awkwardness |
| Australia | Low — staff are paid a full wage |
| Europe | Modest rounding is common |
| Bill amount | Default 50 |
| Watch for | Service already included on the bill |
| Guidance is | Customary, not a rule |
Detailed steps
- Enter the bill and choose the country.
- Check the bill for service already added before tipping on top.
- Adjust for the service you actually received.
Worth knowing
Read the bill before you tip. Many European restaurants add a service charge or a per-person cover, and tipping the customary percentage on top means paying twice — which visitors do constantly. If the bill lists "servizio", "service compris" or a cover charge, a small rounding-up is plenty.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is US tipping so much higher?
Because tipped staff in many US states may legally be paid below the standard minimum wage, with tips expected to make up the difference. The tip is part of the wage rather than a bonus, which is why not tipping there has a different meaning than elsewhere.
Should I tip in Japan?
Generally no. It is not customary and can be genuinely awkward — service is included in the price and excellent service is the expectation rather than something purchased. Leaving money can be politely refused or cause confusion.
What if service is already on the bill?
Then you have already tipped. Rounding up slightly is fine; adding the full customary percentage on top is paying twice, and it is the commonest visitor mistake in Europe.
Are these rules?
Customs, and they shift. Treat them as a starting point, watch what locals do, and adjust for the service you received.
