Fuel is the cost people misjudge most when deciding whether to drive, because it feels like it belongs to the car rather than to the journey. Working it out changes a surprising number of drive-or-train decisions.

What Fuel Cost Calculator does

Multiplies distance by consumption by price. Handles both conventions — L/100km (lower is better) and MPG (higher is better) — which is the detail that trips people up when reading figures from another country.

Defaults to a 300-unit trip so the arithmetic is easy to sanity-check against your own experience.

Inputs

DistanceDefault 300
EconomyL/100km or MPG
<strong>L/100km</strong><strong>Lower is better</strong>
<strong>MPG</strong><strong>Higher is better</strong>
Fuel pricePer litre or per gallon, to match
ReturnsTotal fuel cost for the trip
ExcludesTolls, parking, wear, depreciation
Mind the gallonUS and UK gallons differ by 20%

Detailed steps

  1. Enter the distance and pick your units.
  2. Enter your car’s real economy, not the manufacturer’s figure.
  3. Add the current fuel price and read the trip cost.

Worth knowing

Use your own measured economy, not the number on the brochure. Official figures come from standardised test cycles and real driving is routinely 10–20% worse, more in cold weather or heavy traffic. Fill up, note the odometer, fill up again — that number is the one worth entering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a higher number better or worse?

Depends on the unit, which is exactly why this catches people. MPG measures distance per fuel, so higher is better. L/100km measures fuel per distance, so lower is better. Reading a European figure as though it were MPG makes an efficient car look terrible.

Why is my real economy worse than the official figure?

Test cycles are standardised and gentle. Real driving involves cold starts, traffic, hills, air conditioning and speed — all of which cost fuel. A 10–20% shortfall is normal rather than a fault.

What is not included?

Tolls, parking, tyre and brake wear, servicing and depreciation. Fuel is usually the largest variable cost of a trip but it is not the whole cost of driving.

Does it handle US and UK gallons?

Enter the price in the same gallon your economy figure uses. The two differ by about 20%, which is more than enough to make a comparison meaningless if they are mixed.
