What Salary Converter does
Converts a wage between hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and annual, so two offers quoted differently can be compared directly.
The conversion depends entirely on assumed hours and weeks. Change those and every derived figure moves — which is why comparing a contract rate to a salary is not the arithmetic it appears to be.
How the conversion works
| Converts between | Hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, annual |
|---|---|
| Depends on | Assumed hours per week and weeks per year |
| Common assumption | 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours a year |
| Monthly | Annual ÷ 12, not weekly × 4 |
| 4 weeks ≠ 1 month | A year has 52 weeks, not 48 |
| Figures are | Gross — before tax and deductions |
| Excludes | Bonuses, overtime, benefits, employer pension |
| Contract vs salary | Not directly comparable — see the tip |
Detailed steps
- Enter the figure you have and the unit it is in.
- Set hours per week and weeks per year to match the role.
- Read every other unit.
Worth knowing
A contract hourly rate is not comparable to a salary at the same rate. The contractor has no paid leave, no sick pay, no employer pension and pays their own taxes and equipment — which is why contract rates are conventionally set well above the salaried equivalent. Compare total annual value, not rate to rate.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many working hours in a year?
2,080 is the standard assumption — 40 hours across 52 weeks. It ignores holidays and public holidays, so actual worked hours are lower, but it is the figure most salary conversions use.
Why is monthly not weekly times four?
Because a year has 52 weeks, not 48. Multiplying a weekly figure by four understates monthly pay by about 8%. Always divide the annual by twelve.
Is this gross or net?
Gross — before any tax or deductions. Use the Payroll Calculator to estimate take-home, noting that it needs rates you supply.
Can I compare a contract rate to a salary?
Not by rate alone. Convert the contract rate to an annual figure using the weeks you will actually bill, then subtract unpaid leave, your own pension and equipment costs. The gap is usually large enough to change which offer is better.
