What Take-Home Pay does
Estimates take-home pay from a gross salary after tax, social contributions, pension and any other deductions, broken down per pay period.
One thing to be clear about: you supply the tax rate. This does not know your country, region or personal allowances — it applies the percentages you enter. That makes it useful everywhere and authoritative nowhere.
Inputs and what they mean
| Effective tax rate | Your overall rate across all bands — not your top marginal rate |
|---|---|
| Social security / NI | Entered separately because it is usually a flat-ish percentage |
| Pension | Deducted from gross, so it also reduces taxable pay in many systems |
| Pay periods | Monthly (12), Semi-monthly (24), Fortnightly (26), Weekly (52) |
| Fortnightly quirk | 26 payments means two months a year contain three |
| Not included | Tax bands, allowances, credits, local taxes, benefits in kind |
| Status | An estimate for planning, not a payroll calculation |
Detailed steps
- Enter your gross annual salary.
- Enter your effective tax rate — total tax divided by total income, not the top band you fall into.
- Add social contributions and pension as percentages.
- Pick your pay frequency to see the per-payslip figure.
Worth knowing
The most common mistake here is entering a marginal rate instead of an effective one. If your top band is 40%, your effective rate is usually far lower, because the lower bands are taxed less. Take last year’s total tax divided by last year’s total income and use that — it is the only figure that reflects your actual situation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does this not know my country’s tax rules?
Deliberately. Tax bands, allowances and credits differ by country, region and personal circumstance, and change every year — a tool claiming to model all of that would be wrong somewhere and confidently so. Supplying the rate keeps the arithmetic honest and the responsibility clear.
What is an effective tax rate?
Your total tax divided by your total income. Progressive systems tax bands at rising rates, so someone in a 40% band pays 40% only on the portion above that threshold. The effective rate is usually much lower, and it is the figure this needs.
Why does fortnightly pay look different?
Twenty-six payments across twelve months means two months contain three paydays. Budgeting monthly on a fortnightly salary quietly overstates most months and understates two.
Should I use this to check my payslip?
As a rough sanity check only. A real payslip reflects tax codes, allowances, student loan thresholds and benefits in kind that this cannot see. If the gap is large, that is a question for your payroll department rather than evidence of an error.
