Learn more about privacyStrength meters that praise "P@ssw0rd1!" have taught a generation of people to build weak passwords that look strong. What actually matters is how many possibilities an attacker must search, and that depends on length far more than on symbols.
What Password Strength Checker does
Estimates strength from the character pool your password draws on and its length, giving the size of the search space rather than a vague verdict.
The pools are 26 lowercase, 26 uppercase, 10 digits and 25 symbols. Adding a character type widens the pool once; adding a character multiplies the space by the whole pool.
Character pools
| Lowercase | 26 characters |
|---|---|
| Uppercase | 26 |
| Digits | 10 |
| Symbols | 25 |
| All four | 87 possible characters per position |
| Each extra character | Multiplies the search space by the pool size |
| Cannot detect | Reused or already-breached passwords |
| Runs | On your device — nothing is transmitted |
Detailed steps
- Type or paste the password.
- Read the estimate as a rough order of magnitude, not a verdict.
- If it is short, add length before adding symbols.
Worth knowing
A strength meter cannot see the thing that actually compromises most accounts: reuse. A password that scores perfectly here and is also on a site breached three years ago offers no protection at all, because attackers try known pairs first. Uniqueness matters more than complexity, which is why a password manager beats any amount of cleverness.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a high score mean my password is safe?
No. It means the password is hard to guess by brute force. It says nothing about reuse, whether it has appeared in a breach, or whether you typed it into a phishing page — and those account for far more compromises than brute force does.
Length or symbols?
Length, decisively. Adding a symbol widens the pool from 62 to 87; adding a character multiplies the entire search space by 87. Two more characters beats any amount of punctuation.
Is my password sent anywhere?
No. It is evaluated in your browser and never transmitted — which is the only acceptable design for a tool that asks you to type a password into it.
Why do sites demand symbols if length matters more?
Mostly inherited policy from older guidance. Current advice from bodies such as NIST favours length and uniqueness and discourages forced complexity rules, precisely because they push people toward predictable patterns.
Is Password Strength Checker free?
Yes. The Vootkit free plan includes 5 tool runs a day. Upgrade to Vootkit Pro for unlimited daily use, an ad-free workspace and saved workflows.
Are my files uploaded?
