Worth knowing

Proofread the numbers before anything else. OCR errors cluster in predictable pairs — 0 and O, 1 and l and I, 5 and S, 8 and B — and in ordinary prose your eye repairs them without noticing. In a reference number, a price, a serial or a date there is no context to repair them with, which is exactly where an undetected error does damage. Read the digits; skim the words.

Why is the accuracy poor on my photo?

Photographs of paper are much harder than scans: uneven lighting, a curved page, perspective from holding the camera at an angle, and shadows from your own hand. Flattening the page, shooting straight down and getting even light will usually do more for accuracy than any setting available here.

Can it read handwriting?

No. This recognises printed characters, and handwriting needs a fundamentally different class of model trained on cursive and individual writing styles. Even the specialist services that attempt it produce results that need heavy correction, so it is rarely faster than typing the text out.

Does my image get uploaded?

No — the recognition runs in your browser on your own machine, which is why there is no upload wait and why it works offline once the page has loaded. That matters for the sort of thing people usually OCR: letters, invoices, medical documents and ID pages.

Why did my table come out as a jumble?

Because OCR extracts characters, not layout. Columns get read across rather than down, and cell boundaries disappear entirely. For tabular data the practical approach is to OCR one column at a time by cropping, or to accept that you will be rebuilding the structure by hand.
