Runners think in minutes per kilometre; race results are published in total time; treadmills are labelled in kilometres per hour. They are the same fact expressed three ways, and converting between them in your head mid-run is how people mis-pace a race.

Worth knowing

The race projections assume you hold the same pace over a much longer distance, which almost nobody does. As a rough correction, expect roughly 5% slower per doubling of distance — a 25-minute 5K projects to about 52 minutes for 10K in the arithmetic, but 53–55 is the realistic range.

Why is my projected marathon time so optimistic?

Because it is pure arithmetic — your current pace multiplied by 42.195 km. It cannot model fatigue, fuelling or the wall. Established predictors like Riegel apply a fatigue exponent; treat the projection here as a ceiling on your best case.

How do I convert pace between km and miles?

Multiply a per-kilometre pace by 1.609344 to get per-mile. The tool shows both, which avoids the common error of converting the distance and forgetting to convert the pace.

What pace is a treadmill speed?

Divide 60 by the km/h figure to get minutes per km — 12 km/h is 5:00/km. The tool reports speed alongside pace so you can set a treadmill directly.

Are the race distances exact?

Yes. A marathon is 42.195 km and a half is 21.0975 km by definition. Rounding to 42 km would understate a finishing time by about half a minute at typical paces.
