A mistyped IBAN usually bounces, but not always — and a payment that reaches the wrong valid account is far harder to recover than one that fails. The checksum exists to catch the typo before the money moves.

What IBAN Validator does

Validates an IBAN using the mod-97 checksum defined in the standard, plus the expected length for the country.

Mod-97 is stronger than the simpler schemes used elsewhere: it catches essentially all single-digit errors and transpositions, which is why international banking adopted it.

What is checked

Detailed steps

  1. Paste the IBAN — spaces do not matter.
  2. Check the result.
  3. Verify the recipient separately. See the tip.

Worth knowing

A valid IBAN is not a verified recipient. The checksum confirms the number is well-formed, not that it belongs to the person you think — and payment redirection fraud works precisely by sending a valid IBAN for an account the fraudster controls. Confirm bank details by phone, on a number you already had, before paying an invoice with changed details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a valid IBAN mean the account exists?

No. It means the number is well-formed and passes its checksum. Whether it exists, and whose it is, can only be confirmed by the bank — and increasingly by confirmation-of-payee services where they are available.

Why are IBANs different lengths?

Each country defines its own format within the standard, so length varies from 15 to 34 characters. The country code at the start tells the validator which length to expect.

Do the spaces matter?

No. Grouping into blocks of four is purely for readability; the underlying value is the unspaced string, and both forms validate identically.

How do I avoid paying the wrong account?

Verify changed bank details out of band — phone the supplier on a number you already had, never one from the email requesting the change. Invoice redirection fraud is common and a valid IBAN offers no protection against it.

Is IBAN Validator free?

Yes. The Vootkit free plan includes 5 tool runs a day. Upgrade to Vootkit Pro for unlimited daily use, an ad-free workspace and saved workflows.

Are my files uploaded?

No. IBAN Validator runs entirely in your browser — your file is processed on your own device and never sent to a server. There is nothing for us to store or delete.

Do I need to install anything?

No. IBAN Validator works in any modern browser on desktop, tablet or phone. Open the page and start.

How often can I use it? Is there a daily limit?

On the free plan you get 5 tool runs a day. When you reach the limit you'll see a prompt to upgrade, and it resets the next day. Vootkit Pro removes the cap entirely for unlimited daily use.

This tool processes everything locally in your browser. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it will still work.
