Learn more about privacyThere is no single agreed formula for what a person should weigh — which tells you most of what you need to know about the concept. This shows three of the standard formulas side by side, precisely so the disagreement between them is visible.
What Ideal Weight Calculator does
Runs Devine, Robinson and Miller, all of which work from height above five feet. Devine, for example, is 50 kg plus 2.3 kg per inch over 60 for men, and 45.5 kg plus 2.3 for women.
They routinely differ by several kilograms for the same person. That spread is the honest answer: these are clinical rules of thumb, originally built for drug dosing rather than for telling anybody what to weigh.
The three formulas
| Devine (1974) | Men 50 kg + 2.3/in over 60″; women 45.5 + 2.3 |
|---|---|
| Robinson (1983) | Men 52 kg + 1.9/in; women 49 + 1.7 |
| Miller (1983) | Men 56.2 kg + 1.41/in; women 53.1 + 1.36 |
| Baseline height | 60 inches (5 feet) |
| Units | Metric (cm) or imperial (inches) |
| Also shown | A healthy BMI range for your height |
| Accounts for build? | No — height and sex only |
| Accounts for muscle? | No |
Detailed steps
- Choose units and enter height and sex.
- Compare all three results rather than picking the flattering one.
- Read the BMI range alongside them — a range is a more honest target than any single figure.
Worth knowing
Treat the spread between the three formulas as the real answer. If they give 70, 73 and 77 kg, the useful conclusion is "somewhere around the low seventies", not any one of those numbers. A healthy weight is a range, and these formulas were never designed to identify a personal target.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the three disagree?
They were derived from different populations at different times and were built for clinical purposes such as drug dosing. None was validated as a personal weight target, so their disagreement is a fair reflection of how imprecise the underlying idea is.
Which one should I use?
None, on its own. Look at the range they span, and at the healthy BMI range shown alongside. If you want a target that accounts for your build, training and health history, that is a conversation with a clinician rather than a formula.
Why is there no input for frame size or muscle?
Because none of these formulas use one — they take height and sex and nothing else. That is their main limitation, and it is why a muscular athlete will be told to weigh substantially less than is appropriate.
Does this work for children?
No. All three assume an adult body. Children and teenagers are assessed against growth percentile charts by a paediatrician, and adult formulas do not apply.
