Learn more about privacyMinimum payments are designed to be affordable and to keep the balance alive. Seeing how many years they actually take is the number that changes behaviour more reliably than any advice about spending less.
What Credit Card Payoff does
Works out how long a card balance takes to clear at a given monthly payment, and what adding an extra amount each month saves.
The extra-payment field is the point of the tool. On a balance at typical card rates, a modest addition often removes years and a substantial share of the interest, because every extra pound goes straight at the principal.
Why card debt behaves differently
| Typical card APR | Often 20–25%, far above most other borrowing |
|---|---|
| Minimum payment | Usually a small percentage of the balance, so it falls as you pay |
| Effect of that | The term stretches enormously — decades is not unusual |
| Extra payments | Go entirely against principal, removing all its future interest |
| APR range accepted | 0–100% |
| Compounding | Monthly |
| Best return available | Clearing 22% debt beats any safe 4% savings rate |
Detailed steps
- Enter the balance and the card’s APR — it is on your statement.
- Enter what you currently pay each month.
- Add an extra amount and compare. Try a figure you could genuinely sustain.
- Note the difference in both months and total interest.
Worth knowing
Paying off a card at 22% is mathematically identical to earning a guaranteed 22% return, tax-free, with no risk. There is no investment that offers that. Which is why, apart from keeping a small emergency buffer, high-interest debt generally comes before saving.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do minimum payments take so long?
Because the minimum is typically a percentage of the balance, so it shrinks as the balance does. Most of each payment covers interest, very little reaches the principal, and the term stretches into decades. The structure is doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Should I clear debt or build savings first?
Most guidance is: a small emergency buffer first so a surprise does not put you back on the card, then the high-interest debt, then longer-term saving. Carrying 22% debt while earning 4% on savings is a guaranteed net loss.
What about a 0% balance transfer?
It can help substantially, but check the transfer fee and what the rate becomes when the promotional period ends. It only works if you clear the balance within the window — otherwise you have moved the problem and paid a fee for the privilege.
Does this assume I stop spending on the card?
Yes. It models a fixed balance being paid down. Continuing to spend on the card while paying it off changes the picture completely, and is the usual reason real payoff takes longer than any calculator predicts.
