Learn more about privacyPayment fees have a percentage and a fixed component, and the fixed part is what makes small transactions disproportionately expensive. On a £3 sale, 30p is a tenth of the money.
What Stripe Fee Calculator does
Works out the fee and what you receive on a payment — or reverses it, telling you what to charge in order to receive a specific amount.
The reverse mode is not a simple addition. Adding the fee to the price increases the fee, so the correct figure requires solving for it — which is why manually adding 2.9% always leaves you slightly short.
How the fee behaves
| Structure | A percentage plus a fixed amount per transaction |
|---|---|
| Common default | 2.9% + 0.30 — adjust to your actual rate |
| Effect on small payments | A 5.00 charge loses roughly 9% to fees |
| Effect on large payments | The fixed part becomes negligible |
| Reverse calculation | Charge = (target + fixed) ÷ (1 − rate) |
| Why adding the % fails | Raising the price raises the fee too |
| Not included | Currency conversion, chargebacks, payout fees |
Detailed steps
- Enter the amount.
- Check the fee percentage and fixed fee against your actual account — rates differ by country, card type and plan.
- Choose whether you want the fee on a given charge, or the charge needed to net a given amount.
Worth knowing
The fixed fee is what makes micro-transactions uneconomic. At 2.9% + 0.30, a £2 sale loses 18% and a £200 sale loses 3.1%. If you sell low-value items, bundling them or setting a minimum order is usually more effective than negotiating the percentage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can I not just add 2.9% to cover the fee?
Because the fee is charged on the higher amount you now have. Adding 2.9% to 100 gives 102.90, and the fee on that is more than the 2.90 you added — so you still come up short. The reverse mode solves it properly.
Are the default rates correct for me?
They are a common published starting point, not your rate. Actual pricing varies by country, card type, international cards and negotiated volume terms. Take the numbers from your own dashboard.
Should I pass fees on to customers?
It is legal in many places and restricted in some, particularly for card surcharges. Beyond legality it is a pricing decision — most businesses build fees into the headline price rather than adding them visibly at checkout.
What is not included here?
Currency conversion margins, chargeback fees, payout or instant-transfer fees, and any subscription cost of the plan. On international sales the conversion margin often exceeds the transaction fee itself.
