Return on ad spend is the number every ad platform reports, and taken alone it is misleading — because a 4× return on a product with a 20% margin is losing money.

What ROAS Calculator does

Calculates ROAS from revenue and spend, and the figure that actually decides things: break-even ROAS, which is 1 divided by your profit margin. Defaults to 5,000 revenue on 1,250 spend.

At a 25% margin you need a ROAS of 4 just to stand still. Any campaign below that is buying revenue at a loss, however impressive the multiple looks.

What decides profitability

ROASRevenue ÷ ad spend
Break-even ROAS1 ÷ profit margin
At 50% marginBreak-even ROAS = 2
At 25% marginBreak-even ROAS = 4
At 10% marginBreak-even ROAS = 10
Default revenue / spend5,000 / 1,250 = 4×

Detailed steps

 1. Enter revenue and ad spend for the period.
 2. Enter your real profit margin, after cost of goods and fees.
 3. Compare ROAS against break-even ROAS. Below it, the campaign loses money.

Worth knowing

Work out your break-even ROAS before you launch, not after. A 4× return sounds like a strong campaign and is exactly break-even on a 25% margin — so a business celebrating "4× ROAS" while running a thin margin is spending to stand still. The margin decides the target; the platform never tells you it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ROAS should I aim for?

Above 1 ÷ your profit margin, which is your break-even point. At a 25% margin that is 4×; at 50% it is 2×. There is no universal good number, which is why the platform cannot tell you one.

Why is my profitable-looking ROAS losing money?

Because ROAS uses revenue, not profit. If cost of goods, shipping and payment fees consume 75% of revenue, a 3× return is below the 4× you needed. The multiple looks healthy and the bank balance disagrees.

Should I account for repeat purchases?

For a business with genuine repeat custom, yes — a first order below break-even can be sound if customers come back. That is a lifetime-value calculation rather than a ROAS one; use LTV:CAC.

Why does the ad platform report a higher ROAS than I see?

Attribution. Platforms tend to claim credit for conversions that would have happened anyway, and use generous attribution windows. Compare against total revenue rather than trusting the dashboard alone.

Is ROAS Calculator free?
